Site Consultation and Wastewater Disposal
Enman Engineering was retained by the McKernon Group, Brandon, Vermont, designers and builders of this 6,000 sf dwelling, to provide site consultation and wastewater disposal engineering. This three story second home, located on 375 acres of land high in the mountains of Rochester, Bethel and Stockbridge, Vermont, would not have been possible without a persistent approach to site investigations and an innovative approach for a wastewater disposal system design.
The owners, who own several other vacation properties around the nation, sought to create a Vermont reprieve with spectacular views, in an elegant country home. The house overlooks the horse barns and pastures, all erected as part of this project.
The property has all the characteristics of Vermont, it is rugged with steep slopes, with shallow depths to bedrock and shallow seasonal high water table. The property, exempt from state wastewater disposal regulations, needed to comply with the applicable regulations for the town in which the dwelling and disposal system were located.
After a detailed series of soils classifications a site was selected for the wastewater disposal system. However, due to steep slopes within the area of the proposed disposal system, a variance from the town was necessary. Because of shallower depths to water table, a treatment system was proposed to reduce the impact on ground waters.
The wastewater disposal system, designed for this six bedroom dwelling, has a capacity of 900 gpd. The synthetic media treatment system is installed in the rear of the dwelling, enclosed within a rock wall enclave. The disposal system is located on a 30% slope down gradient of the dwelling, nestled amongst the trees in an old apple orchard.
The wastewater treatment and disposal system consists of an 2000 gallon septic tank, Orenco AX 10 Textile Filter, a 600 gallon dosing siphon and pressure distribution system consisting of three individual trenches stretched 300 feet along the 30% slope.
